We are currently staying in Derby which is a small township at the beginning
/ end of the iconic Gibb River Road. As much as we would like to travel
this road, it is inappropriate with our caravan. It would have required us
to put the caravan in storage, take the tent and drive the nearly 900
kilometres to the Wyndham/Kununurra end of the road and then return to Derby
either returning along the same route or taking the bitumen road. We would
then have collected the caravan and taken the bitumen road to continue our
journey. We have decided we will consider that another year. However, we
did decide to visit Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek this trip.
We invited our friends, Jocelyn and Greg Lay, to join us for a day trip.
The Gibb River Road leading to the gorge is a bitumen strip for the first
eighty odd kilometres and then is corrugated dust. Soon after we left the
bitumen a cattle road train came towards us and the resulting dust was just
incredible. It was necessary to pull over and wait for the dust to clear as
there was absolutely no visibility. Perhaps it is just as well we are not
going the full length of this road!
