Derby boab prison tree

The most famous boab trees here in Derby is the "Prison Tree". The tree is
believed to be about 1500 years old. Historically it was used as a staging
point for Aboriginal prisoners being walked into Derby. It is a hollow tree
trunk standing fourteen metres wide and has an opening one metre wide by
about two metres high. Apparently it was used for holding a number of the
prisoners on their way to Derby for sentencing. The area is now considered
sacred by the local Aboriginal people and is fenced off for this reason.

As it is winter and the dry season, there was only one leaf on the tree and
high in the tree we could see one of the nuts. Peter also noted that there
was a large wasp nest in the trunk with a steady stream of wasps.
