Paddocks of tomatoes in Carnarvon

Prior to arriving in Carnarvon we had heard that it was a large
horticultural area and supplied approximately 80% of the vegetables sold in
Western Australia. We were surprised to find that leading up to Carnarvon
is all desert and it is only as you are within about five kilometres of the
town that you begin to see the ploughed paddocks and also the banana
plantations.

We are a bit early for the fruit and vegetables to be ready for sale at the
property stalls. However before too long there will be heaps of tomatoes as
that seems to be the most popular produce. The tomatoes are grown outside,
sometimes under netting, and with wooden or bamboo stakes. There are
paddocks of them so there will be a bumper crop before too long.
